Men’s Soccer Downed by Mt. St. Vincent in OT Thriller

Patchogue, NY| Despite an equalizer off the foot of junior Justin Busto in the 88th minute, the St. Joseph's College (L.I.) men's soccer team suffered a 4-3 double overtime defeat at the hands of the College of Mount St. Vincent at Danzi Stadium on Wednesday evening.

With the loss the Golden Eagles slide to 2-7 on the year and 2-2 in Skyline Conference play as the Dolphins improve to 4-5-1 (3-0 Skyline).

SJC took the lead late in the second half when sophomore Kyle Conway booted an attempt from 30 yards out that sailed into the top right corner in the 40th minute. Vincent's Kevin Jardines would draw the guests back one minute into the second half when he buried a loose ball in the box for his fifth goal of the season.

Senior Brian O'Sullivan's 62nd-minute tally—which he converted in front in goal following a free kick attempt by freshman Rayneri Ruiz that hit the crossbar—again put SJC ahead, but after 19 minutes of scoreless play the Dolphins tied the game for the second time thanks to a Tim Guido tally.

Five minutes later, Mt. St. Vincent took its first lead of the evening (3-2) when Jair Magallan beat SJC keeper Avery Gomez with a shot from just outside the 18-yard box.

Short on time, the Golden Eagles found their equalizer in the 88th minute when Ruiz played a short ball in the box to a streaking Busto, who finished low on the left side.

After a scoreless first overtime it was the Dolphins that found the extra-time winner with just over one minute remaining on the clock. Guido would tally his second goal of the evening when he finished off a right-sided cross at the far post.

Despite the loss, Sullivan and Conway turned in strong efforts in midfield, and defender Eddie Whalen was a menace down the right side for the hosts.

Gomez recorded six saves in a match that saw his side outshot 23-17. The Dolphins would also generate more corners (5-3).

The Golden Eagles return to action on Saturday, October 1 when they host the United States Merchant Marine Academy at 2:30 PM. Live stats for the match will be available here.
