Sullivan’s 2nd-Half Goal Leads Men’s Soccer Past USMMA

Patchogue, NY|Senior Brian O'Sullivan scored the winner and game's only goal as the St. Joseph's College (L.I.) men's soccer team held off the United States Merchant Marine Academy for a 1-0 home victory in Skyline Conference action on Saturday afternoon.

With the win, the Golden Eagles improve to 3-7 (3-2 Skyline) on the season as the Mariners slip to 4-4-2 (4-1 Skyline).

After a scoreless first half, that saw USMMA outshoot SJC 10-2, O'Sullivan broke the deadlock in the 47th minute, when he curled a 35-yard attempt over the head of USMMA keeper Cory Maier.

The Golden Eagles continued to apply pressure and generated eight shots while also keeping USMMA's attempts to the outside.

With the chance to double the SJC lead in the final two minutes of the game, sophomore Michael Flynn saw his point-blank attempt stopped by Maier, but the one-goal lead would be enough as the Golden Eagles defense stood tall.

Senior Avery Gomez made nine saves in a game that saw his side outshot 22-10. Of SJC's 10 shots, Flynn and freshman Rayneri Ruiz led the way with three apiece.

The Golden Eagles return to action on Friday, October 7 when they host St. Joseph's College (Brkln) in a East-West clash at 7:00 PM. Live stats and video will be available here.
