N. Myrtle Beach, SC| The St. Joseph's College (L.I.) softball team opened its 2016 season on Wednesday afternoon with a split, knocking off Robert Morris-Springfield 9-1 in a five-inning contest before suffering a 6-5 defeat to PSU-Abington at the Fastpitch Dreams Classic in N. Myrtle Beach, SC.

St. Joseph's 9, Robert Morris-Springfield 1 (5 Innings)

The Golden Eagles opened the scoring in the bottom of the first, when Kristen Arbiter sent Jillian McFadzen home with a double to left field. Two at-bats later, Megan Leun would score Arbiter, and Elizabeth Rohme ensured SJC took a 3-0 lead into the second with an RBI single to left.

McFadzen's RBI single to right in the bottom of the fourth increased the Golden Eagles' lead to 4-0, and later, in the bottom of the third, Leun would score Gabrielle Cinquemani with a double before Mallory McClafferty's RBI double extended the lead to 6-1 after three innings.

Arbiter and Cinquemani drove in additional runs in the bottom of the fourth before McFadzen's RBI double to center scored Nicole Baron and ended the game in the bottom of the fifth.

McClafferty pitched all five innings and struck out five batters, allowing just one hit en route to her 16th-career win. McFadzen hit 4-4 with two RBI's and two runs in her collegiate debut. Leun (2-3, two runs, two RBI's) also had a strong outing.

PSU-Abington 6, St. Joseph's 5

After pulling ahead 2-0 after three innings via runs generated by Arbiter (RBI double in the first, ground out in the third), the Golden Eagles poured it on in the top of the fourth, pulling ahead 5-0. After McClafferty's RBI single scored Rohme, McFadzen drove in two additional runs with a triple four at-bats later.

In the bottom of the sixth, PSU's Breanna Lineman and Becca Dougherty put the Nittany Lions on the board with RBI singles and doubles, respectively. With no response from the Golden Eagles in the top of the 7th, PSU took the field looking to erase a three-run deficit (5-2). Greta Sheridan would advance to first before Whitney DeLagol singled and advanced the outfielder to third. With the next at-bat, Danielle Hebling reached first on an error to load the bases for Lineman, who ended the game (6-5) with a walk-off grand slam.

Handed the loss for SJC was Sandra Foster, who struck out four batters and allowed five hits. PSU's Jennifer Rakita (2-0) struck out two batters in the victory.

McFadzen had another strong showing, going 3-4 with two RBI's and one run. Arbiter went 1-4 with two RBI's.
