Softball Drops Pair to Stockton

Galloway, NJ| The St. Joseph's College (L.I.) softball team suffered a two-game sweep at the hands of Stockton University in Galloway, NJ on Thursday afternoon and, as a result, slide to 8-6 (2-2 Skyline) on the season. The Ospreys improve to 10-4 on the year with the victories.

Game 1: Stockton 5, SJC 3

After Mallory McClafferty's RBI double scored Elizabeth Rohme and put the Golden Eagles ahead 1-0 in the top of the first, the Ospreys responded in the bottom of the the first with three runs of their own. Samantha Shockey's RBI single through the left side tied the game at one and Alexa Massa's single to center scored two more runs to give Stockton the 3-1 lead.

The Golden Eagles fired back in the top of the second and tied the game up at three after Madeline Sganga's double to left center scored Nicole Baron and Lindsey Corriss' sac fly scored Sandra Foster.

Following scoreless third and fourth innings, the Ospreys jumped back in front in the bottom of the fifth when Nicole Tomo's RBI single sent Samantha Liepe home. With no response in the top of the sixth, Stockton added an insurance marker in the bottom half of the inning to increase the lead to two runs (5-3), which was good enough to seal the victory.

Foster (1-2) took the loss for the Golden Eagles in a 5.2 inning performance that saw her strike out one batter and allow 10 hits.

Offensively, SJC struggled, generating only four hits in the contest.

Game 2: Stockton 9, SJC 3

Following two scoreless innings, Corriss gave the Golden Eagles the 1-0 lead when she advanced home after a Kristin Arbiter reached first on a throwing error.

Stockton would put up a three-spot in the bottom of the third with Danielle Lugo scoring two runs off a single and Dominique Dorris increasing the Golden Eagles' deficit to two runs (3-1) with an RBI double to right center.

Baron and Megan Leun would score in the top of the fourth to knot the game up at three after another Stockton throwing error, but three runs in the bottom of the inning to put the hosts up 6-3.

A run in the fifth and two more in the sixth for the Ospreys went unanswered (9-3) as the Golden Eagles suffered their sixth defeat of the season.

Lauren Buturla got the start was handed the loss for SJC, allowing six earned runs in five innings. Katelyn DeVinney (0.1 innings) and McClafferty (0.2 innings) made appearances in relief

Gabrielle Cinquemani and Leun both went 2-3, with the latter also scoring a run.
