Women's Tennis Drops Season Opener at Yeshiva

Flushing, NY| The St. Joseph's College (L.I.) women's tennis team dropped its first contest of the season against Skyline Conference foe Yeshiva University 6-2 on Wednesday evening. The Golden Eagles fall to 0-1 (0-1 Skyline) after their opening match, while Yeshiva improves to 1-2 and 1-0 in conference play.

The tandem of Shannon Merker and Kelley McGrath were defeated by Shani Hava and Tzipora Leiser 8-2, while Rita Wehrli and Vicky Panicola went to a tiebreak with Yeshiva's Galila Shapiro and Jannah Eichenbaum but dropped their match 9-7. In the #2 doubles match, Victoria Makulik and Michelle Stanczak earned a 8-3 victory.

In singles, Merker dropped her match 6-1 and 6-1, but Makulik defeated her Ayala Carl 0-6 and 1-6.

Mcgrath's match was halted before it finished; she was trailing 3-4 in the second set after winning 6-4 in the first.

Yeshiva managed to secure its two single matches in straight sets.

Panicola took Lindsay Frucher the distance as they went into a tie breaker. Frucher however, claimed the 10-8 win.

The Golden Eagles continue conference play at home when they face Skyline rivals St. Joseph's College (Brkln) on Saturday September 12 at 12:00 PM.
