Flushing, NY| The St. Joseph's College (L.I.) women's tennis team traveled to Flushing on Wednesday night and handed Hunter College a 8-0 loss at the National Tennis Center. Picking up their econd straight win, the Golden Eagles move to 10-2 on the season and Hunter slides to 4-5 on the year.

Both St. Joseph's and Hunter had the privilege of playing on courts that greats like Serena Williams, Roger Federer and Pete Sampras have graced. The match marked a high point in the program's history and thrilled both players and coaches.

"How many young players dream of walking into a stadium to play on court that have hosted U.S. Open events?" commented SJC head coach Glenn Nathan. "Such great matches have been played at Louis Armstrong Stadium featuring Jimmy Connors, Billie Jean King and Chris Everett, and now we can add Shannon Merker and Michelle Stanczak of St. Joseph's College to the list."

The Golden Eagles got off to a fast start, taking the first doubles as the tandem of Victoria Panicola and Erika Hesselbirg defeated Pauline McGlone and Catherine Ng 8-0. Next, Victoria Makulik and Michelle Stanczak defeated Mary Budin and Paulina Szegda 8-2 to claim the second doubles point.

To sweep the doubles results, Shannon Merker and Kelley McGrath defeated Angelica Usherenko and Sara Beck 8-5.

The Golden Eagles kept the momentum going in singles play, as Panicola handed a quick defeat to Rivera 6-1, 6-1.  Hesselbirg also defeated her opponent Ng 6-1, 6-2.

Stanczak defeated Linda Yohannes 6-0,6-0 while Makulik defeated Szegda 6-1, 6-2.
