Women's Tennis Outlasts Sarah Lawrence 5-4

Broxville, NY| The St. Joseph's College (L.I.) women's tennis team defeated Sarah Lawrence, 5-4, to clinch the no. 3 seed in the Skyline Conference Championship Tournament on Saturday afternoon. The Golden Eagles close out the regular season with a 12-2 (5-2 Skyline) record, while the Gryphons clinched the fourth seed in the tournament with a 8-4 (4-3 Skyline) record.

The tandem of Kelley McGrath and Victoria Panicola got the Golden Eagles started, winning the first point of the match by defeating Autumn Atkinson and Juliet Slade 8-2. SJC doubled its lead as Victoria Makulik and Michelle Stanczak handed Nora Landes and Sofia Reh an 8-3 loss. The third double match featured Rita Wehrli and Erika Hesselbirg, who fell just short of a victory dropping their contest 9-8 (7-2)

The Gryphons tied the match up 2-2, as Landes defeated Makulik 6-4, 6-1. The Golden Eagles recaptured the lead as Hesselbirg defeated Slade 6-4, 6-4. Reh made the match even as she defeated Wehrli in three sets 4-6, 6-4, 6-1.

St. Joseph's saw momentum switch to its side as Stanczak defeated Lane Garber 6-1, 6-3 to take the 4-3 lead. Panicola won the game for the Golden Eagles claiming a 6-3, 6-3 victory. Atkinson received the fourth point against McGrath 6-3, 6-1.

The Golden Eagles will begin their postseason journey on Wednesday, October 21 when they travel to take on Yeshiva University in the first round of the Skyline Conference Tournament.
