Women's Tennis Blanks Gators 9-0

Patchogue, NY| The St. Joseph's College (L.I.) women's tennis team won its eighth straight match by a score of 9-0 against the Sage Colleges Sunday afternoon at the Outdoor Field Complex. The Golden Eagles improve to an 8-1 (2-1 Skyline) season as the Gators fall to 2-10 (1-5 Skyline) on the year.

 

The Golden Eagles started off the match sweeping all three doubles matches and jumping to an early 3-0 lead against the Gators. The tandem of Rita Wehrli and Victoria Panicola got the rally started with a 8-0 victory


A 8-1 victory by Victoria Makulik and Michelle Stanczak secured the second doubles point. Not too long after the doubles point was won, Shannon Merker and Kelley McGrath defeated Katie Shultz and Emily Shultz, 8-6, in the number one doubles position.

In singles play, Panicola defeated Samantha Diggell, 6-1 and 6-1 in the number six spot. Wehrli topped Alex Faas, 6-2, 6-0 on the fourth court.

In the fifth spot, Erika Hesselbirg won in a 7-6 (7-4) and 6-0 matchup agaisnt Lindsey Tohan


In the first single spot, Merker picked up a 6-3, 6-2 win against Shultz extending SU's lead to 7-0. Two wins from Makulik and McGrath on courts two and three respectively, aided the Golden Eagles to its second shutout.

The Golden Eagles will play next on Monday, October 12 against cross-town rivals Farmingdale State at 5:00 PM at the Outdoor Field Complex.
