Women's Tennis Blanks SJC Brooklyn 9-0 in Home Finale

Patchogue, NY| The St. Joseph's College (L.I.) women's tennis team (9-2, 3-2 Skyline) swept its third match of the season on Tuesday night, this time against St. Joseph's College (Brooklyn) at the Outdoor Field Complex.

The Golden Eagles grabbed the lead early and didn't look back, winning all three doubles matches to open the competition.

Rita Wehrli and Victoria Panicola quickly dominated Brianna Vurckio and Katie Wenzler, 8-0, while Victoria Makulik and Michelle Stanczak cruised past Princess Baptiste and Mary Edward with an 8-2 victory. Shannon Merker and Kelley McGrath sealed the third point for SJC with an 8-5 win on court one.

The momentum carried over into the singles competition, as the Golden Eagles captured two more points from Panicola and Erika Hesselbirg on courts five and six. Shortly after, McGrath and Makulik followed with two-set victories to extend the lead to 7-0.

Giving up just two points during her singles match, Wehrli took down Edward by a score of 6-1, 6-1. Merker then clinched the shutout with a 6-3, 6-3 win against Trerotola to end the match.

The Golden Eagles finish up their regular season with a three-game road trip starting on Wednesday, October 14 when they take on Hunter College at the National Tennis Center at 3:30 PM.
