Women's Tennis Sweeps New Rochelle, 9-0
Patchogue, NY| The St. Joseph's College women's tennis team surrendered just two games in its home opener on Wednesday afternoon, which resulted in a sweep of the College of New Rochelle, 9-0. Picking up their first win of the season, the Golden Eagles move to 1-1 on the year, as New Rochelle slides to 0-2.
The Golden Eagles got off to a fast start, with the #1 doubles tandem of Shannon Merker and Kelley McGrath defeating Nancy Varughese and Samantha Gomez 8-1. Victoria Makulik and Michelle Stanczak defeated Shanique Roye and Marie Gomez 8-0, and Rita Wehrli and Vicky Penicola defeated Shirley Garcia and Iyesogie Aghahowa 8-0 to sweep the doubles matches 3-0.
SJC maintined its momentum in singles play, as Shannon Merker handed a quick defeat to Nancy Varughese 6-0, 6-0 before Victoria Makulik topped her opponent Samantha Gomez 6-0, 6-0.
Kelley McGrath defeated Shanique Roye 6-1, 6-0, while Rita Wehrli defeated Marie Gomez 6-0, 6-0.
Erika Hesselbirg and Panicola completed the sweep defeating their opponets 6-0, 6-0.
The Golden Eagles will continue action on Saturday, September 19 when they take on Bard College at 2:00 pm at the Outdoor Field Complex.
