Matt Lopez places first at Bard Invitational

Annandale-on-Hudson, NY| Junior Matt Lopez finished first in the men's 8k race at Saturday's Bard College Invitational.

The men's cross country team finished fourth in a field of seven and second among NCAA Division III institutions, while the women were second overall and first among Division III schools in the 6k race.

The SJC women were powered by freshman Gianna Dickson, who posted a 25:27.4 time and finished in fourth place. The Golden Eagles tallied 48 points; 31 more than first-place St. Thomas Aquinas and 53 fewer than third-place Suffolk County CC.

Junior Emily Venturi took eighth place (25:52.8) and senior Caleigh Capek (26:10.2) was 11th. Senior Julia Boris (12th) and sophomore Marissa Degni (19th) rounded out a scoring contingent that set a new program-record five-person time average (26:30).

Lopez's 27:04.0 set a new school record for the Bard Invitational, breaking Ryan Wilson's 27:39.4 in 2019.

Junior Anthony Hristidis (33:27.8) and senior Raymond Laporte (35:48.0) finished in 25th and 39th places, respectively.

With 105 points, SJC was 80 points adrift of first-place St. Thomas Aquinas, and 31 points off second-place Staten Island.

The Golden Eagles return to action on Saturday, October 2, when they participate in the NJIT Invitational at Branch Brook Park in Newark, NJ.
