Brockport Wins the Battle of Golden Eagles

Patchogue, N.Y. – The St. Joseph's Golden Eagles (1-4) lost both games of the doubleheader, 13-2 and 11-3, on Sunday to the Golden Eagles of Brockport State (4-0).

St. Joseph's started off the first game with a pitching by committee approach. With the trip to Florida ahead, the Eagles looked to get work in for each pitcher. Mike Bazoge (Medford, N.Y. / Patchogue-Medford) started the game off with a 1-2-3 inning. Robert Hyde (West Babylon, N.Y. / West Babylon) took the mound for the next two innings and gave up one earned run and was credited for his second loss of the season. Errors plagued St. Joseph's in the loss as the Golden Eagles had eight total errors which led to seven unearned runs for the pitching staff. The Eagles were able to score two runs in the bottom of the eighth off a double to leftfield by junior catcher Dominick Giammona (Deer Park, N.Y. / Deer Park) and a wild pitch that scored Giammona. The Brockport pitching staff had St. Joseph's number by striking out eight Eagles and allowing eight scattered hits in the 13-2 win.

In the second game, Brockport got on the board early with seven runs in the second inning off starter Steve Szobesky (Seaford, N.Y. / Seaford). A passed ball and error by the shortstop led to only one of the seven runs being earned in the inning. Only three of the 11 total runs were earned due to five more errors by St. Joseph's. The Golden Eagles couldn't figure out the Brockport pitching until the bottom of the eighth inning. The inning started off with a single to right center by Mike Feerick (West Babylon, N.Y. / West Babylon), then two walks by Dan Diblasi (Lindenhurst, N.Y. / Lindenhurst) and Jordan Goldman (West Babylon, N.Y. / West Babylon) loaded the bases. Freshman Matt Leach came in to pinch hit and delivered a 2-RBI double scoring Feerick and Diblasi. Goldman scored in the next at-bat off a wild pitch by Brockport's Rob Stankiewicz. However, the Eagles' late inning rally was cut short with strikeouts by the next three batters.

St. Joseph's will travel to Fort Myers, Florida to take part in the Gene Cusic Classic. The team will be there from March 13-17.
