Baseball Completes Senior Day Sweep of NYU-Poly

Patchogue, N.Y. – The St. Joseph's college baseball team (14-20, Skyline 9-7) celebrated its senior day with a sweep of the Fighting Blue Jays of NYU-Polytechnic (3-17, Skyline 1-12).  The squad won by the score of 8-3 in the first game and 12-2 in the second game of the doubleheader.

Before the games the Eagles honored their five seniors - Brian Hannigan (West Babylon, N.Y. / St. John the Baptist), Seth Pileggi (Smithtown, N.Y. / Smithtown Christian), Kenny Willms (Centereach, N.Y. / Centereach), Matthew Glotzer, (Holbrook, N.Y. / Sachem East) and Sean McCauley (Bellmore, N.Y. / Mepham).

Glotzer got the start in the first game of the doubleheader was roughed up for three runs in the top of the first.  He was replaced by Steven Szobesky (Seaford, N.Y. / Seaford) who pitched a stellar eight scoreless innings, allowing seven hits, one walk, and striking out 12 Blue Jays.  Szobesky earned his third victory of the season and lowered his ERA to an impressive 1.69.

St. Joseph's got all the runs Szobesky would need in the bottom of the first.  Brian Hannigan led off with a single to left then stole second. He scored on an RBI single by Willms.  Later in the inning, second baseman Anthony Andreani (Whitestone, N.Y. / Holy Cross) plated three runners, on a double, to give the Eagles a 4-3 lead they would not squander.

Hannigan finished the game 3-for-5 with three runs scored.  Willims was 2-for-4, including a triple, and freshman DH Matt Ginobbi (Nesconset, N.Y. / SmithTown East) was 2-for-4, as well, with two RBI that came in the bottom of the fifth off a single.

Robert Hyde (West Babylon, N.Y. / West Babylon) got the start on the bump in the second game of the doubleheader. He pitched five scoreless innings while striking out six and allowing just seven base runners as he won his third game of the season.

Willms again got St. Joseph's on the board early, hitting a sacrifice fly to center plating Hannigan. The Golden Eagles then exploded for eleven runs in the bottom of the third, allowing St. Joseph's to cruise to the easy 12-2 victory.

Willms added another RBI in the third on a single to center, giving him two in the second game. Catcher Mike Aloisio (Westbury, N.Y. / W.T. Clarke) also had two RBI, both coming in the bottom of the third.  Hannigan scored three times in game two and added another stolen base.

The next game for St. Joseph's is a double header on Thursday at 4:00 p.m against the Colonials of Western Connecticut (11-15). Last season the Colonials defeated the Eagles 7-3 and 4-3.
