Men's Soccer Sunk in Columbus Day Affair at NJCU

Jersey City, N.Y. — The Golden Eagles (2-11-2) played tough on Sunday in their match against New Jersey City University (6-6-1), but their efforts were not enough to slay the Gothic Knights. Terrance Dzus (Central Islip, N.Y./ Islip) was certainly using his noggin though, keeping his team alive with two expert headers in the 6-2 game.

The Eagles were able to match the Knight's offensive forces for most of the first half, answering NJCU's first goal 20 minutes into the game with one of their own at 30:07.  SJC's scoring began with Gaetano Innamorato's (West Babylon, N.Y./ West Babylon) perfectly placed corner kick to Dzus, who then headed the ball into the net, right off of the left post and out of the keeper's reach.

The Knight's then took control of the next 50 minutes of the game, scoring four unanswered goals and effectively knocking the wind out from beneath the Eagles' wings. SJC rallied for one more goal at 84:05 though as Dzus found the back of the net for the fourth time this season off of Adam Friel's (Bayport, N.Y./ Bayport-Blue Point) free kick from the right wing.

The Knights went on to score their sixth goal of the game minutes later, cinching their victory.  SJC goalie, Avery Gomez (Bay Shore, N.Y./ Bay Shore), saved 6 out of 12 shots on goal while the Golden Eagles took a total of nine shots on goal over the course of the match.

The Golden Eagles will host William Paterson University on Wednesday at 7 p.m. at the SJC Outdoor Complex.
