Lacrosse Flies High Over Hartwick Hawks, 11-7

Patchogue, N.Y. - The St. Joseph's women's lacrosse team (2-3) flew by the Hartwick Hawks (1-2), 11-7, in a non-conference matchup on a stormy Saturday afternoon at Danzi Stadium.

St. Joseph's Heather Ferchland (Selden, N.Y./ Centereach) notched three goals for her third consecutive hat-trick of the season.  Lady Golden Eagles Caitlynn Webber (Eastport, N.Y./Eastport-South Manor) and Meaghan Haber (East Northport, N.Y./ John Glenn) also added multi-goal performances scoring two marks apiece, while Webber contributed an assist.

The Golden Eagles had a dominant first period, recording 28 first half shots compared to Hartwicks' nine attempts.

Both teams traded goals through the first 18 minutes of play for a 3-3 tie, with Kristin Carroll (Patchogue, N.Y./ Patchogue) scoring a free position shot and Haber finding the net twice for back-to-back goals.

At 6:40, the Lady Eagles surged for a 4-0 run that was headed by a Webber shot that was placed in-between the legs of the Hawk's goaltender off a Jessica Cordano (Oakdale, N.Y./ Connetquot) helper.

Kacie Mitterando (Mastic Beach, N.Y./ William Floyd) scored the next goal, followed by a Cordano score from a rebound shot, and a Ferchland tally with 55 seconds remaining to give the Golden Eagles a comfortable 7-3 advantage going into halftime.

The Golden Eagles and Hawks battled in an aggressively competitive first half with Hartwick getting flagged with four yellow cards and SJC receiving one card.

Coming out of halftime, the visitors closed the gap, outscoring the home team 4-1, cutting the SJC lead to one.

With five-minutes remaining, the Golden Eagles ramped up their offense to score three unanswered goals from Ela Igedelar (Islip, N.Y./ Islip), Webber, and Ferchland.

St. Joseph's defense was stout throughout the contest holding the Hawks to 21 shots, while winning the battle on the turf, topping in groundballs 26-22.

SJC's keeper, Courtney Wickline (Medford, N.Y./ Bellport) centered the defense with six total saves.

Up next for the Lady Golden Eagles will be another non-conference opponent, which will be away next Wednesday against the Manhattanville Valiants (2-1) at 5:00 p.m.
