Swimming Finishes Second in First Competition of the Season

Bronxville, N.Y. – The St. Joseph's Golden Eagles managed a second place overall finish at the Sarah Lawrence Sprint Carnival on Saturday. The Eagles final score was 435 points, just behind Sarah Lawrence with 474 points and well ahead of Brooklyn College in third.

The Eagles "A" team took second in the Women's 200 Yard Medley Relay with a time of 2:11:21. They finished just four seconds behind the hosts, Sarah Lawrence. The anchor Melissa Nocco had the best time for the team, 28.54. The Golden Eagles "B" team finished the heat in ninth place with 18 points.

Lauren Ouzounian and Gabriella Cannon competed in the Women's 200 Yard IM. Ouzounian took first and Cannon finished seventh. Gabrielle Zollo followed up Ouzounian's performance with a first place finish of her own in the Women's 100 Yard Freestyle. Zollo's teammate Melissa Nocco was just five seconds behind her, finishing in fifth.

Taylor Buckley was one second ahead of her competition as she took first in the Women's 50 Yard backstroke. Lorena Waters finished seventh. Gabriella Cannon and Janece Guerra finished fourth and fifth respectively, in the Women's 50 Yard Breaststroke. Zollo took fourth in the 100 Yard Butterfly, while Buckley finished seventh. Nocco was three second behind the leader in the Women's 50 yard freestyle, good enough for a fourth place finish. Lorena Waters came in tenth.

Lauren Ouzounian took home her second gold finish of the day in the Women's 100 yard backstroke. Kimberly Mazza wasn't far behind her in fifth. Nocco took fourth and Guerra finished seventh in the Women's 100 yard IM. Buckley and Mazza finished third and fourth respectively in the 200 yard freestyle.

Ouzounian continued her domination of the rest of the field as she finished first in the Women's 50 yard butterfly, but unlike the rest of her victories on the day, this one didn't come easy. She finished just 0.24 seconds in front of Gabrielle Zollo who finished second. Cannon took fourth and Guerra took ninth in the 100 yard breaststroke. The Golden Eagles once again finished behind Sarah Lawrence in a relay. The Eagles took second place by a margin of two and a half seconds. St. Joseph's "B" team took eighth in the competition.
