Eagles Lose by One in Tight Matchup Against Purchase

Patchogue, N.Y. – The St. Joseph's Golden Eagles (2-5, 1-2 SKY) were defeated by the Purchase Panthers (7-3-1, 3-1-1 SKY) on Friday night by the score of 98-97.

Gabrielle Zollo (West Islip, N.Y./West Islip) came in first in the opening individual event on the evening, the 1000 Yard Freestyle. Melissa Nocco (Holbrook, N.Y./Sachem North) followed up that performance with a first place finish in 200 Yard Freestyle. Lauren Ouzounian (East Setauket, N.Y./Ward Melville) finished first in the 50 Yard Freestyle and Kim Mazza (Bohemia, N.Y./Connetquot) took first in the 200 Yard IM.

Zollo grabbed her second victory of the day in the 100 Yard Butterfly, while Gabriella Cannon (Bayshore, N.Y./St. Anthony's) came in third in that event. Nocco settled for second place in the 100 Yard Freestyle, less than a second behind the winner. Ouzounian finished first once again, this time in the 100 Yard Backstroke. Mazza also came in first in the 500 Yard Freestyle. Janece Guerra (Ronkonkoma, N.Y./St. Anthony's) finished in third place in the 100 Yard Breaststroke and the Eagles took first place in the 200 Yard Freestyle Relay.

The final two points gained by the Purchase "B" team in that last relay event proved to be the different in the swim meet.

The Golden Eagles will meet Purchase once again, this time on the road, in the Skyline Conference Championship this Thursday at 5 p.m.
