Baseball Tops CCNY In Game 1; Caught in Beaver Trap in Second

Patchogue, N.Y.– The St. Joseph's Golden Eagles (7-8) took on the City College of New York Beavers (7-4) Saturday in a non-conference doubleheader at Gregg Alfano Field. The squad endured an even split, as they prevailed in the first game and lost the second. During the first game, they kept the bats hot and extended their win streak to five by a score of 11-4. However in the second game, they faltered on the defensive end committing two errors resulting in a 5-4 loss.

Game 1: St. Joseph's 11, CCNY 4

The Golden Eagles were able to keep their bats alive, achieving double digits in the hit column with 12. In the second inning, the team was able to strike first and post the first runs on the board. It came by way of Joe Calabrese's speed on the base paths, after an infield single. After advancing twice on two separate wild pitches, he was able to cross the plate on the second.

With already grabbing the lead, the Golden Eagles would hold on to it for the entirety of the game. The highlight inning came during the 3rd, as they were able to post an additional six runs on the board, tacking on to their lead. Nick Girardi, Calabrese, Dennis McAllister all were able to come through in the clutch as they each had an RBI single in the inning. Anthony Andreani also contributed by way of a sacrifice fly to right field. The biggest hit of the inning came off the bat of James Terry as he doubled to right field.

The team was able to hold their lead while simultaneously adding more runs in the 5th and 6thinning with two apiece. Terry came through yet again with another extra base hit, as he tripled, scoring Joseph Calabrese for his second RBI of the game.

The Golden Eagles would surrender three runs in the top of the 7th, as a last ditch effort from CCNY with their backs against the wall. It wouldn't be enough, however, as Chris Bauer was able to shut the door.

Frank Ziegler (1-0) put forth a terrific effort on the mound as he went five innings, allowing one run, one hit and four walks in five innings to pick up the win.

Game 2: CCNY 5, St. Joseph's 4

The Golden Eagles were able to get off to an early lead for the second time in as many games, however the lead would eventually slip through their fingers. In the top of the 3rd, CCNY was able to tie the game at 2-2, but it wouldn't last long. In the bottom of the frame, St. Joseph's was able to post another two runs and regain the lead. Brendan Sullivan tripled in the inning (scoring Girardi), tacking on his team-leading tenth RBI of the 2015 campaign.

To the Golden Eagles dismay, the Beavers were able to chew their way back to the lead in the top of the 5th. They scored two runs on three hits, and would hold the lead for the remainder of the game.

Only being down one run, the Golden Eagles had the opportunity to capitalize on last licks, in the bottom half of the 7th inning. They would most certainly make it interesting, as they were able to load the bases, however, they couldn't come up with the big hit. Joseph Lynn was able to get a nice piece of the ball, but hit it directly at the second basemen who was able to make the play. Despite showing much fight and heart, the Golden Eagles weren't able to come up with the necessary run to extend the game resulting in a split of the doubleheader.

The Golden Eagles will look to get back up to .500 overall, and continue their perfect Skyline Conference record, this Monday against the Rams of Farmingdale State.
