Baseballl Locks Up First Place in Skyline With CMSV Sweep

West Harrison, N.Y. – A doubleheader sweep of Mt. St. Vincent (8-23, 5-7 SKY) by St. Joseph's (16-12, 11-1 SKY) locked up the top seed in the upcoming Skyline Conference Baseball Tournament for the Golden Eagles.  The tournament to be played on May 1-3 will be double elimination format to determine which institution grabs the conference's automatic bid into the NCAA Division III Championship Tournament.

To start the day, SJC jumped out in the second inning with six runs on four hits and one Mt. St. Vincent error.  The Golden Eagles loaded the bases and got their first two runs from a Joseph Lynn fielder's choice RBI and a throwing error that brought home the second.  Two batters later James Nakashian hit a two-run single up the middle scoring Lynn (who stole second) and Ryan Walsh, who reached on a base hit.  Nick Girardi followed with a walk and then Brendan Sullivan knocked a two-run double to left center, resulting in the final two runs of the inning.

SJC added two more in the top of the fourth and fifth as Sullivan doubled in Girardi and Nakashian and Anthony Bonilla doubled home Lynn and Anthony Andreani, making it 10-0.  A Lynn base hit scored Walsh in the top of the seventh for the eleventh run.

Golden Eagle starter Josh Outsen, was lights out giving up a measly two hits and two walks and struck out five, to bolster his record to 4-1.  The game was mercy ruled in the seventh inning as Outsen closed it out.

In the second contest, CMSV scored an unearned run off starter Girardi via a fielder's choice but SJC came back later in to score five times. In the fifth, Lynn hit an unconventional bunt to third that wound up bringing two runners in to score, to take a 2-1 lead.  Calabrese added an RBI single in the sixth.  In the seventh, a double steal of second and home for Bonilla and Lynn, stretched the lead to 4-1.   Girardi capped it with fifth run on a base hit, scoring Bonilla.

Girardi started the game on the mound for St. Joseph's and evened his record at 1-1.  He allowed one hit and one earned run in four innings pitched and struck out six.  Michael Catanzaro picked up his second save of the season with three innings of relief as he gave up two hits and struck out two.
