On Tuesday, the St. Joseph's University, New York (L.I.) men's soccer team won its third straight conference match with a 1-0 victory over Mt. St. Mary.

  • Sophomore Lucas Pelaez scored the only goal of the match

  • Senior Connor Owenburg contributed one assist in the contest

  • Junior Giuseppe Vitale collected another shutout, recording four saves on four shots faced

  • Cesar Martinez of the Knights finished with 10 saves, facing 11 shots 

How it happened
  • St. Joseph's found the back of the net in the 22nd minute as Owenburg put a ball back into the box that found the right foot of Pelaez at the top of the box, who put it away in the upper left-hand corner of the goal

  • As the first half came to a close Marco Mazzarelli of Mt. St. Mary found space for an opportunity that was sent away to keep by Vitale 

  • In the opening minute of the second half, it was the Knights again who presented a chance to tie the game but again Vitale was there for the save

  • Late in the second half Diego Saravia was able to get off two different shots that were both saved by Martinez, which led to Sonny Farrell and Nicholas Mohaupt shots being blocked leaving SJLI with a one-goal lead

  • The 85th minute saw MSMC's last opportunity to tie the game as Peter Ramirez had a chance at a header off a far cross that Vitale saved to solidify the victory for St. Joseph's

  • SJLI finished with 19 shots while MSMC had nine

  • The Golden Eagles had six corner kicks compared to the Knight's four
