Men's Golf Captures Second at SUNY Old Westbury Invitational

Middle Island, NY| The St. Joseph's College (L.I.) men's golf team began its 2015-16 campaign on Friday afternoon in the Skyline Conference qualifying round at the SUNY Old Westbury Invitational, held at the Spring Lake Golf Club in Middle Island, New York.

As a squad, the Golden Eagles shot a combined 308, 20 strokes over par, which was good enough for a second-place finish behind Farmingdale State College whose team posted a 306.

Senior Christian Bleck, the defending Skyline Conference Champion, posted a score of 74-which placed him in a tie for first place with Senior Matt Adwar from Farmingdale State College.  A playoff was held, and Christian made par on the first hole of the playoff to secure the victory.  Matt Adwar missed his par putt and made bogey.

Senior Zac Campanelli and Robert Bray turned in strong rounds as well placing fourth and seventh with scores of 76 and 78, respectively.

Sophomore Vinny Garofalo was playing in only his third collegiate tournament and had it going really well-one under par after the first nine holes, he was just out of the top 10, and finished11th with a round of 80..  Unfortunately, he was the victim of a very bad, but common, occurrence on the golf course.  He hit a drive on hole #10 which embedded itself in the soft turf and was deemed a lost ball.  He eventually completed the hole with a score of 8 on the par 4.

First-year Patrick Standard added a top-20 finish, placing 20th overall with a score of 85. Head Coach George Cangero was impressed with the freshman after his first collegiate round. "He showed great promise for the future and will be a solid contributor throughout his collegiate years."

The Golden Eagles continue their road to the Skyline Conference Championships on Friday September 18 as Farmingdale State will host round two of the Skyline Conference qualifiers at Bethpage State Park Red Course at 12 PM.
