SJC Men’s Golf Skyline Championship Preview

Armonk, NY| One year removed from a second-place finish at the 2014 Skyline Championship, the St. Joseph's College (L.I.) men's golf team looks to topple a Farmingdale State side that has won seven consecutive titles when they travel to Brynwood Country Club in Armonk, NY to compete in the 2015 rendition of the event on Sunday, October 17.

After finishing first during regular season qualifying, the Golden Eagles have positioned themselves to capture their first conference title since 2007. Head coach George Cangero returned last season's individual champion Christian Bleck for his senior season, and the St. James, NY native has formed a powerful one-two punch with fellow classman Zac Campanelli. The duo earned second and fourth place finishes during qualifying and is key to St. Joseph's success on Sunday.

"Farmingdale and St. Joseph's could not be more evenly matched," said Cangero ahead of practice on Friday. "It certainly will be very exciting and I anticipate a very close, competitive match."

Expected to fill out the Golden Eagles competing contingent are junior John Melandro, senior Robert Bray and sophomore Vinny Garofalo. The trio all finished in the top 11 during regular season qualifying.

Brynwood Golf & Country Club in Armonk, NY, will be the site for the 2015 Skyline Conference Golf Championship, which will take place Oct. 18-19 on the 6,348-yard, par-70 course and hosted by Purchase College. Sunday's action will get underway at 11 a.m., while Monday's second-round will commence at 10 a.m.

All seven Skyline Conference institutions that sponsor golf will be represented, including four teams and an additional four individuals.

Over the course of three qualifying rounds over the last month, the Golden Eagles of St. Joseph's College-Long Island totaled a team score of 914 strokes -- one better than seven-time defending conference champion, Farmingdale State College. Mount Saint Mary College qualified with a third-place total of 947 strokes, while Purchase College rounded out the team field with a 982 count.

In addition, Sage Colleges' DJ Ioele, SUNY Old Westbury's Andrew Pohalski, and the Yeshiva duo of Shimon Savitsky and Max Shulman will attempt to dethrone defending championship medalist, St. Joseph's-Long Island's Christian Bleck (74.0 stroke average over the three qualifiers), for the individual conference title.
