Patchogue, NY| The St. Joseph's College (L.I.) softball team swept John Jay College, 5-3 and 9-1, to pick up its first two wins of the 2018 season at home on Tuesday afternoon.
The victories bring the Golden Eagles to 2-4 on the year as the Bloodhounds slip to 3-9.
SJC 5, John Jay 3 (9 innings)
The hosts took an early 1-0 lead in the first when sophomore Franzelyn Russo (2-for-5) reached home on a passed ball. SJC maintained control until the fourth inning when a pair of fielding errors resulted in John Jay scoring three unearned runs to take a 3-1 lead.
RBI singles off the bats of senior Theresa Cardello (1-for-5) and sophomore Ashley Accardi (3-for-4) in the bottom of the fifth knotted the score up at three, but neither team was able to generate the winning run through regulation.
After squandering a bases-loaded opportunity in the eighth inning, SJC earned the victory in dramatic walk-off fashion in the ninth when senior Kristen Arbiter (2-for-3) belted a game-winning two-run homer to left center.
Picking up the win for St. Joseph's was Cardello (1-1), who struck out a career-best 13 batters and allowed no earned runs in a complete-game effort.
SJC 9, John Jay 1 (5 innings)
Picking up where they left off, the Golden Eagles took a 3-0 lead in the first when Cardello (2-for-3) knocked in a pair of runs with a two-RBI single before Arbiter (2-for-3) scored the designated player with a double to right on the next at-bat.
John Jay posted its only run of the contest in the third when Jessica Barbaria (1-for-2) singled up the middle, but senior Samantha Magerovich (1-for-3) reestablished SJC's three-run lead in the second half of the inning with an RBI single to right center.
The hosts posted five runs across three at-bats in the bottom of the fourth to go up 9-1 and clinched victory following the top of the fifth when the Bloodhounds failed to shrink their eight-run deficit.
Senior Ashley Blydenburgh (1-1) retired four batters and allowed one earned run for SJC.
The Golden Eagles return to action on Thursday, March 29 when they host Hunter College for a non-conference doubleheader at 4:00 pm.
