Softball Breezes Past Farmingdale in Skyline Championship Opener

Patchogue, NY| The second-seeded St. Joseph's College (L.I.) softball team dismissed third-seeded Farmingdale State, 8-0, in its opening game of the double-elimination Skyline Conference Softball Championship at the Outdoor Field Complex on Friday afternoon.

The Golden Eagles (19-8) continue play in the winners bracket against top-seeded Mount Saint Mary College at 11:00 am on Saturday morning. The Rams (17-17) face the College of Mount Saint Vincent in the losers bracket tomorrow at 1:00 pm.

Senior pitcher Theresa Cardello (10-3) set the tone for SJC, striking out two batters and allowing only one hit in a complete-game victory.

Sophomore outfielder Franzelyn Russo went 3-for-4 and drove in two runs. Senior catcher Kristen Arbiter was 3-for-3 with two RBI's and senior first baseman Samantha Magerovich went 1-for-2 with three runs and an RBI.

Scoreless till the third, the Golden Eagles took a 1-0 lead when sophomore Jillian McFadzen (0-for-3) scored Magerovich from third with a sac fly to center.

A four-run fourth--which featured Russo's two-run single up the middle--made it a five-run game (5-0) before the tournament hosts posted a three-spot in the sixth to clinch the 8-0 mercy-rule victory.

SJC chased Farmingdale starting pitcher Jaxie Collard (9-8) who allowed four earned runs on five hits in 4.0 innings of action.

The winner of tomorrow's winners bracket contest between the Golden Eagles and the Knights will play for a chance at the conference title on Sunday morning. The loser meets the loser of the Farmingdale-Mount Saint Vincent game at 1:00 pm in an elimination game at 3:00 pm.
