Softball Earns Second-Straight Sweep

Patchogue, NY| The St. Joseph's College (L.I.) softball team picked up its second-straight doubleheader sweep on Thursday afternoon when it earned 11-3 and 4-2 victories over Hunter College at home.

The wins bring the Golden Eagles to 4-4 on the year as the Hawks slip to 3-7.

SJC 11, Hunter 3 (6 innings)

A strong first inning set the tone for the hosts, who posted three runs in the bottom half of the inning. Across three-straight at-bats, senior Kirsten Arbiter (3-for-4), junior Lyndsay Smocer (3-for-3) and senior Samantha Magerovich (1-for-4) drove in a run apiece. Two at-bats later, sophomore Ashley Accardi (2-for-3) scored Magerovich with an RBI double to center field.

Hunter scored twice in the second (4-2), but Arbiter's RBI double in the bottom half of the inning reestablished SJC's three-run lead (5-2).

A third score for the guests in the third made it a 5-3 contest, but four runs in the fourth and another in the sixth clinched mercy-rule victory for the Golden Eagles.

Picking up her second win of the season was senior Theresa Cardello (2-1), who retired four batters and allowed one earned run.

SJC 4, Hunter 2

Picking up where they left off in game one, SJC went up 1-0 in the first when sophomore Elise Grau's (0-for-1) walk forced sophomore Franzelyn Russo (3-for-4) home (1-0).

Arbiter's (2-for-4) two-RBI double in the second preceded Smocer's (1-for-3) RBI double to center in the second and gave the hosts a 4-0 advantage.

A two-RBI double off the bat of Hunter's Samantha Molloy (1-for-3) cut the Hawks' deficit to two runs (4-2), but from there SJC shut the door and earned the victory.

Senior Ashley Blydenburgh (2-1) struck out two and allowed two earned runs in a complete-game effort for St. Joseph's.

The Golden Eagles return to action on Friday, March 30 when they visit the College of Staten Island for a non-conference doubleheader at 12:00 pm.
