Golden Eagles Taken Down by Brooklyn Bulldogs at Ramapo Tournament

Mahwah, N.J. — The Golden Eagles (0-2) fell to Brooklyn College (1-1) on Sunday, 69-44, in their second game of the season. Despite the loss, Rynese Smith (Greenpoint, N.Y./ Bellport) was awarded an All-Tournament Team honor for her performance at the weekend's Ramapo College Roadrunner Tip-Off Tournament. Against Brooklyn, Smith led her team's efforts with 12 points, four rebounds and three steals; she sank seven out of her eight free throw shots.

SJC came out of the gate strong, meeting the Brooklyn Bulldogs at every point. Once the game tied at 18 though, the Bulldogs fell into a rhythm with their shooting. Sinking three three-pointers and three jump shots within the last six minutes of the first half, Brooklyn was able to break away from the Eagles and effectively established a ten-point lead by halftime.

The lead only grew as the Bulldogs scored 14 points before SJC put up their first two points of the second half. This run gave the Bulldogs confidence and effectively knocked the wind out of the Golden Eagles who were unable to recover.  The game ended 69-44.

To add to Smith's contributions, Jennifer Gubell (Levittown, N.Y./ MacArthur) proved to be an asset off the bench with 11 points. While the Eagles' shot poorly from the outside, their free-throw percentage was strong at 68 percent.

The Golden Eagles will host Medgar Evans on Wednesday for a 5:30 p.m. game. The team's Skyline Conference games begin in January.
