Women's Basketball Surges Past Rutgers-Camden, 63-50

Patchogue, NY| The St. Joseph's (L.I.) women's basketball team opened its 2015-16 home slate with a 63-50 victory against Rutgers-Camden in the Danzi Center on Monday night. The Golden Eagles are now 2-3 on the year, as the Raptors fall to 2-1 on the season.

The Golden Eagles found themselves trailing 5-0 early in the first quarter, Jacqueline Zizzo brought St. Joseph's within three with five minutes remaining. Rutgers-Camden started to pull away as they held a 11-5 lead with under a minute remaining in the quarter.  Michelle Lupoli made two jump shots to close out the frame 11-9.

The Raptors held St. Joseph's College to just nine points in the second half, as they started the second half on a 7-1 run. Zizzo cut the lead to two, 20-18, making back-to-back three pointers with three minutes left in the half.  The Raptors closed out the half with a 7-0 run, as St. Joseph's entered the half trailing 27-18.

St. Joseph's got off to a strong start in the second half as it sparked a 10-1 run in the first three minutes. Michelle Obasi made back-to-back layups to retake the 32-29 lead.  Trailing by three, the Golden Eagles went on a 12-1 run to escape the clutches of the visiting Raptors. Rutgers-Camden would not get the Golden Eagles lead to below nine points for the remainder of the game.

Andrea Iavarone converted a three-point play to start off the fourth quarter with the 44-34 lead. The Golden Eagles started to pull away with the lead as they sparked another run as they lead 51-38 with under six minutes remaining. The two sides continued to trade baskets as Rutgers-Camden tried to cut its deficit, but the Golden Eagles would end up with the 63-50 lead.

Zizzo finished the night with 14 points and have five assists and a steal. Iavarone collected her fourth double-double of the season with a 13 point and 12 rebound in the game.

Lupoli also finished with double digits scoring 12 points and collecting eight rebounds.

The Golden Eagles will continue their home stand as they will play host to John Jay College on December 2 at 6:00 PM.
