John Jay Outlasts Women's Basketball, 61-58

Patchouge, NY| St. Joseph's College (L.I.) women's basketball team drop a tightly contested contest to John Jay, 61-58, on Wednesday night at the Danzi Center. The Golden Eagles are now 2-4 on the season and John Jay improve to 2-3 on the year.

The two teams traded baskets for much of the first quarter, as the Golden Eagles started to pull away with the 12-8 lead with 2:24 remaining. The Bloodhounds finished the quarter with an 8-2 run to retake the lead 16-14.

The two sides continued to trade possession as neither team saw more than a three-point lead. St. Joseph's found itself down 31-27, but finished the half strong with a 4-0 run to enter the half tied 31-31.

SJC entered halftime with the hot hand as Andrea Iavarone sparked a 10-4 run scoring six points for the Golden Eagles.  The Bloodhounds made two baskets to pull within five; at the end of the third quarter SJC would still have the 45-40.

The Golden Eagles made two quick baskets on John Jay as they lead by nine with nine minutes to play. The Bloodhounds started to tack on baskets and cut their deficit to four, 50-54, with five minutes to play.  Dana Nicholson scored three points from behind the arc to close John Jay's deficit to one. The Bloodhounds then scored two quick layups to take the 57-54 lead. Iavarone retook the lead, 58-57, with two free throws with a 1:38 on the clock. After a minute of neither team scoring of a basket, Brianna Cunningham scored a late basket with :22 seconds. Down by one Terri Chu would make two late free throws to close out the game 61-58.

Iavarone scored a game-high of 23 points and 20 rebounds for her fifth double-double of the season. Jackie Zizzo had nine points and four assists, as Asia Rountree assisted with three points and scored nine points and three rebounds.

 The Golden Eagles host St. Joseph's College Brooklyn in the school's first-ever Skyline matchup on December 8 at 6:00 PM.
