Women's Basketball Suffers Loss to Lehman Despite Late Flurry

Patchogue, NY| Despite a double-double performance from Andrea Iavarone, St. Joseph's women's basketball suffered a 72-62 loss to Lehman College in a non-conference match insde the Danzi Center on Wednesday evening. The loss drops the Golden Eagles to 3-7 (1-1 Skyline) on the season.  

St. Joseph's and Lehman exchanged blow-for-blow in the first quarter before Iavarone drew contact on her way to the basket, connecting on both charity shots to lift the Golden Eagles to a 11-9 lead with 4:31 remaining. SJC would go on to lose the lead after the Lighting sparked an 8-5 run to close out the period with the advantage, 17-16.  

The Golden Eagles lost some steam in the second quarter, as Lehman came out blazing—shooting 66.7% from the field. The Lighting outscored SJC 23-8 in the quarter, taking a 40-24 lead heading into intermission.

Iavarone headed a strong turnaround in the second half, scoring seven points in the third and four in the fourth as the Eagles made a push for a comeback.

Down 70-44 with 3:22 left in the contest, the Golden Eagles surged on an 18-2 run that featured five straight 3-pters from Jackie Zizzo and Jennifer Gubell. SJC's late game heroics fell short as time would go on to expire cementing the 72-62 defeat.

Defensively, St. Joseph's defended the glass well, out-rebounding the Lighting 46-28.

Iavarone headed the defensive effort grabbing a game-high 16 rebounds, while supplying a team-high 19 points. 

Claire Brady provided effort and tenacity on the court scoring six points, nabbing five boards, dishing five assists, and snatching five steals. 

St. Joseph's College will look to rebound in its next match up as the Golden Eagles travel to Mount Saint Vincent in a Skyline Conference battle Monday, January 4 at 5:30 PM.
