Men’s Soccer Downed in Season-Opener

Patchogue, NY| The St. Joseph's College (L.I.) men's soccer team was defeated, 4-1, by Western Conn. State in its 2019 season-opener at Danzi Stadium on Monday afternoon. The loss ensures the Golden Eagles start the season with an 0-1 record as the Colonials improve to 1-1.

SJC's only tally of the afternoon came off the foot of reigning Skyline Conference Offensive Player of the Year Rayneri Ruiz, who beat the Western Conn. keeper near side in the sixth minute.

Sophomore Aydin Olgun got the start for the Golden Eagles in goal and made four saves on eight shots.

Western Conn. opened the scoring just 39 seconds into the contest when Vinicius Santana tallied an unassisted mark. After entering the break tied at 1-1, the Colonials took their second lead of the match when Franz Muhaj headed a goal past Olgun in the 47th minute.

Kent Eannarino extended the guests' lead to two goals in the 54th minute and Joseph Fortuna wrapped the afternoon's scoring when he finished off a cross inside the box in the 77th minute.

In total, SJC was outshot 20-6 in the contest and generated three corner kicks to Western Conn.'s five.

The Golden Eagles return to action on Wednesday, September 4 when they host Kean University for a non-conference contest at 7:00 pm.
