Men’s Volleyball Takes Split in Non-Conference Tri-Match

The St. Joseph's College (L.I.) men's volleyball team split a non-conference doubleheader on Saturday afternoon having dropped its opening contest, 3-2, to #4 Stevens Institute before topping host Hunter College, 3-1. The results move the Golden Eagles to 13-3 overall on the year.

Stevens 3, SJC 2

The Golden Eagles edged the fourth-ranked team in the nation, 27-25, in set one to take an early match lead and later won the fourth set, 25-18, to force a deciding set five. Stevens tallied the set's first point and went on to win the frame 15-7 for a 3-2 match victory.

Junior Paul Curaro powered the SJC offense with a game-high 16 kills. The outside hitter also contributed six digs and two blocks.

Junior Matthew Amberge contributed 10 kills and eight digs, and junior Will Flohr went for eight kills and a game-high 12 digs.

Senior Tyler Jones dished out 40 assists and had a hand in two blocks.

SJC 3, Hunter 1

The guests jumped out to an early 2-0 match lead in the afternoon's final contest but dropped the third set, 25-22, to Hunter. In the fourth, SJC fended off a late-set surge to clinch set (25-21) and match (3-1) victories.

Flohr hit .212 and led the Golden Eagles with 16 kills. Curaro contributed 15 kills and 15 digs, and senior Danny McNamara was credited with 19 digs.

Jones went for 41 assists, 19 digs and two service aces.

SJC hit .114 as a team and held the Hawks to a -.012 hitting percentage.

The Golden Eagles return to action on Tuesday, March 19 when they visit the College of Mount St. Vincent for a Skyline Conference contest at 7:00 pm.
