Softball Splits with Paterson on Saturday

Patchogue, NY| The St. Joseph's College (L.I.) softball team earned a non-conference split with William Paterson University at the SJC Softball Stadium on Saturday afternoon.

The Golden Eagles, who moved to 3-4 overall on the year, won game one 10-2 (5 innings) before dropping an 18-10 decision to the 9-6 Pioneers in game two.

Game 1: SJC 10, WPU 2
Tied at one heading to the bottom of the third, Emily Fenezia (1-for-3) gave SJC a 2-1 lead when her single to third scored Laurn Crawford (2-for-3)

Later in the inning, Victoria Iavarone (2-for-3) knocked in a pair of runs with a single to center field and extended SJC's lead to three runs (4-1).

The hosts exploded for six runs in the bottom of the fourth before securing a mercy-rule win in the fifth. Lauren Crawford's (2-for-3) two-RBI triple got the run started and Emily Bazarewski (0-for-2) and Julia Ruocchio (1-for-3) scored runs off an error to tally SJC's ninth and 10th runs.

Patricia McGloin (1-1) fanned two batters and picked up the win for St. Joseph's on the mound.

Game 2: WPU 18, SJC 10
A wild affair saw SJC fall behind 5-1 in the top of the third, but a five-run bottom half of the inning saw the hosts go ahead 6-5.

Five different players posted RBIs in the inning, including Ruocchio (2-for-3), who singled up the middle to start the run. Dimezza's (2-for-3) single through the right side scored Riley Lim-Ellis (1-for-3) and gave SJC the 6-5 edge.

The Pioneers went back ahead, 11-6, in the top of the sixth, but SJC responded with four runs in the bottom half of the inning to bring the contest back to within one. Again it was Ruocchio who got things going, this time with a two-RBI triple down the right field line.

SJC's comeback hopes were dashed, though, after Paterson tallied seven runs in the top of the seventh.

Olivia Verderosa started on the mound for SJC and struck out one batter in 2.2 innings of work. Ruocchio (1-1) was credited with the loss, allowing three earned runs in 3.0 innings.

The Golden Eagles return to action on Wednesday, March 30, when they visit SUNY New Paltz for a non-conference doubleheader at 3:30 pm.
