DeFina and Verderosa Star in Softball’s Senior Day Sweep of Sarah Lawrence
Patchogue, NY| Jenna DeFina broke the program's career stolen base record in game one and Olivia Verderosa tossed a perfect game in game two as the St. Joseph's University (L.I.) softball team completed a Senior Day Sweep of Sarah Lawrence on Saturday afternoon.
With 11-0 and 17-0 victories, the Golden Eagles extended their winning streak to eight games and improved to 13-0 overall and 8-4 in Skyline Conference play this season.
DeFina and Verderosa, along with seniors Lindsay Ness, Jenna Kreiling, Victoria Iavarone, and Patricia McGloin were honored during a Senior Day ceremony in between games.
Game 1: SJLI 11, SLC 0 (5 innings)
After a two-run first inning (2-0), DeFina (4-for-4) recorded a single in the bottom of the second and promptly stole second base, recording the 61st stolen base of her career and setting a new program record in the process.
In the fourth inning, Lauren Crawford's (0-for-2) sac fly scored Madison DiPalo (1-for-2) before Julia Ruocchio (2-for-3) singled to left field and scored two more runs (5-0).
DeFina scored two runs with an RBI single up the middle in the fifth inning (7-0) before Ness (2-for-3) ended the game with a walk-off inside-the-park grand slam (11-0).
McGloin (W, 5-3) fanned eight batters and allowed two hits in a complete-game effort.
Game 2: SJLI 17, SLC 0 (5 innings)
St. Joseph's recorded five triples inside the first three innings of game two, the first of which came via Crawford 3-for-3) in the first inning (1-0).
Ruocchio's (3-for-3) triple scored Crawford two at bats later (2-0), and Crawford belted her second triple of the game in the bottom of the second, scoring Kreiling (2-for-2) in the process (4-0).
Riley Lim-Ellis (2-for-3) and Ness (2-for-4) also tripled in the third inning. Ness' triple drove in three runs and extended SJLI's lead to 11-0.
Crawford, later in the third inning, doubled and scored DeFina (2-for-3) and Kate Kiernan (1-for-3), marking St. Joseph's final two runs of a high-scoring afternoon (17-0).
Verderosa's perfect game produced eight strikeouts. She moves to 6-2 on the year with the win.
The Golden Eagles return to action on Sunday, April 24, when they visit Mt. St. Mary for a Skyline Conference doubleheader at 1:00 pm.
