Softball Drops Two at Mt. St. Mary

Newburgh, NY| The St. Joseph's University (L.I.) softball team had its eight-game winning streak snapped on Sunday after taking a pair of losses, 7-6 and 5-4, to Skyline Conference rival Mount St. Mary College.

The losses send the Golden Eagles to 13-12 overall on the year and 8-6 in Skyline play as the Knights improve to 15-12 and 11-1.

Game 1: MSMC 7, SJLI 6
The Knights scored all seven of their runs in the bottom of the second inning and held SJLI scoreless until the fourth inning when Riley Lim-Ellis (2-for-4) recorded and RBI single up the middle (7-1).

A two-run fifth brought the Golden Eagles to within four runs (7-3) before Lim-Ellis doubled to left center in the top of the seventh (7-5), scoring Lindsay Ness (1-for-3) and Jenna DeFina (2-for-3).

Later in the inning, Victoria Iavarone (1-for-4) scored Olivia Verderosa (0-for-0) with a single to center field (7-6), but that was all St. Joseph's could muster in the contest.

Patricia McGloin (L, 5-4) started and took the loss for SJLI. Alexa Tenety provided 5.0 innings of relief and blanked the knights.

Game 2: MSMC 5, SJLI 4
The Golden Eagles jumped out to an early 2-0 lead in the first inning when Lauren Crawford (2-for-3) scored DeFina (1-for-4) with an RBI double and later scored when Lim-Ellis' grounded out to short.

SJLI conceded three times in the third and twice more in the fifth, falling behind 5-2 in the process.

Madison DiPalo's (1-for-2) sacrifice bunt scored Julia Ruocchio (1-for-3) in the seventh (5-3), and Jenna Kreiling (1-for-2) cut the deficit to one run (5-4) with an RBI single through the left side, but another late rally again proved insufficient.

Verderosa (L, 6-3) started on the mound for SJLI and struck out one batter in 4.0 innings. Tenety struck out two and allowed one hit in 2.0 innings of relief.

The Golden Eagles return to action on Saturday, April 30, when they face St. Joseph's University (Brkln) for a Skyline Conference doubleheader at Long Island University at 12:00 pm.
