Purchase, NY| The St. Joseph's College (L.I.) softball team cruised to a doubleheader sweep of Skyline Conference rival SUNY Purchase with 8-1 and 5-0 victories on Tuesday afternoon.
The wins see the Golden Eagles improve to 7-10 overall on the year and 4-4 in conference play as the Panthers drop to 8-10 and 4-2.
Game 1: SJC 8, Purchase 1
Up 1-0 in the top of the fifth, SJC went for three runs to extend its lead to 4-0. Lauren Crawford (2-for-4) and Julia Ruocchio (1-for-4) recorded RBI singles and Emily Fenezia (0-for-3) scored Ruocchio with a ground out to short.
Madison DiPalo (1-for-4) scored Victoria Iavarone (2-for-3) in the top of the sixth (5-0) before Lindsay Ness (2-for-4) sent DiPalo and Jenna DeFina (3-for-5) home with a two-RBI double (7-0).
Iavarone scored off an error by the Purchase center fielder to wrap the scoring (8-1) in the top of the seventh.
Olivia Verderosa (W, 3-1) fanned five batters and allowed four hits in a complete-game effort.
Game 2: SJC 5, Purchase 0
Ness (1-for-4) put SJC on the board in the top of the first with an RBI single to right field before DiPalo (1-for-3) doubled the early lead (2-0) when her fielder's choice scored Ness.
Crawford (2-for-4) belted an RBI double to left center in the top of the second (3-0) and would later score DeFina (3-for-4) for a second time with an RBI triple in the top of the sixth (5-0).
Alexa Tenety (W, 1-3) struck out 10 and allowed four hits for her first SJC victory.
The Golden Eagles return to action on Friday, April 15, when they host John Jay for a non-conference doubleheader at 12:00 pm.
