Softball Takes Two From John Jay on Friday

Patchogue, NY| The St. Joseph's College (L.I.) softball team scored eight runs in back to back games to sweep a non-conference doubleheader against John Jay on Friday with 8-5 and 8-3 victories. 

The Golden Eagles improve to 9-11 overall on the year while John Jay falls to 8-12. 

Game 1: SJC 8, John Jay 5
John Jay scored in the first inning to go up 1-0, but SJC would answer back with a massive eight-run fourth inning. 

Riley Ellis (1-for-2) hit an RBI single to bring home Lindsay Ness to tie the game up at one. Julia Ruocchio (1-for-2) followed with an RBI double of her own to score Ellis and give SJC the lead.

With the bases loaded, Jenna Kreiling (1-for-3)  grounded into a fielder's choice to bring in the third run of the inning. Jenna Defina (2-for-4) hit an RBI single followed by a Lauren Crawford (1-for-3) double that scored three Golden Eagles. Lindsay Ness (2-for-3) would plate in one more run to give the Golden Eagles an 8-1 lead heading into the fifth. 

John Jay would score three runs in the ninth inning, but the Golden Eagles held on for an 8-5 victory. 

Patricia McGloin (W, 3-3) struck out three batters and allowed one run in a 5.0 inning performance. 

Game 2: SJC 8, John Jay 3
The Golden Eagles set the tone with a three-run first inning. Cailyn Rodriguez (1-for-3) brought home Lauren Crawford (1-for-3) with an RBI single to give SJC the lead. Victoria Iavarone (1-for-1) brought in a run with a sac fly and Elena Serio (1-for-3) brought in another with an RBI double (3-0). 

In the second inning, Jenna Defina (2-for-3) got an RBI single and managed to score herself off an error to add to the lead (5-0). 

John Jay scored two runs of their own in the third, however, Jenna Kreiling (1-for-3) reached first base on an error to score Iavarone and get one back (6-2) in the bottom half of the inning. 

A sac fly from Defina in the fourth brought in Samantha Dimezza  to score another run (7-2). 

SJC's last run in the fifth inning came via an RBI single from Kreiling to bring in Iavarone. John Jay scored once in the ninth but the Golden Eagles held on for the 8-3 win. 

Olivia Verderosa (W, 3-2) pitched 6.0 innings and allowed two runs with four strikeouts. 

The Golden Eagles return to action on Saturday, April 16th, at 12:00 PM at SJC Softball Stadium for a conference doubleheader against Old Westbury.
