SJC WOMEN'S SOCCER AND WILLIAM PATTERSON PLAY TO A 1-1 TIE

Wayne, NJ| The St. Joseph's College (L.I.) women's soccer team (0-0-1) kicked off its 2015 campaign on Wednesday evening, as they faced William Patterson (0-0-1) at Pioneer Soccer Park in Wayne, NJ. The two teams would go the distance into double overtime, and the game ended in a 1-1 tie.

William Patterson got off to a strong offensive start during the opening minutes of the game and earned the first corner kick during the second minute, which led to a header that missed just wide of the goal. In the 12th minute, the Pioneers registered their first shot on goal, which was saved by senior goalkeeper Katie McGarrell.

Chelsea Bellini recorded her first shot as a Golden Eagle in the 26th minute, but it was blocked by the Pioneers defense. William Patterson had another opportunity to score the first goal late in the first half, but the ball struck the crossbar and it was cleared out of the box.  After 45 minutes of play, both teams were held scoreless, although the Pioneers outshot the Golden Eagles 8-1.

William Patterson was credited with the first shot of the second half, but the Golden Eagles capitalized on their first scoring opportunity in the 62nd minute, when Bellini sent a ball in from the left side that found Claire Brady who finished at the far post to give St. Joseph's the 1-0 lead.

Ten minutes later, the Pioneers found an equalizer courtesy of Rachel Rivell to even the score 1-1. William Patterson had five shots on goal in the last 15 minutes of action but could not find a go-ahead goal for the win. The two sides would head into overtime tied 1-1.

St. Joseph's defense held the Pioneers to one shot in the first overtime period and even had the opportunity to grab the win off a corner late in the second half, but no winner was found and the game ended 1-1.

St. Joseph's was credited with three shots and one corner on the evening, while William Patterson recorded 19 shots and seven corners. McGarrell finished the night with seven saves for the Golden Eagles.
