SECOND-HALF GOALS LIFT HARTWICK PAST ST. JOSEPH'S COLLEGE

Oneonta,NY| St. Joseph's College (0-1-1) allowed of pair of goals in the final 10 minutes of the second half in a 2-0 setback to Hartwick College (2-0) on Saturday afternoon. The match was the opening fixture of the Mayor's Cup.

The first half featured five shots for Hartwick and one for the Golden Eagles. The Hawks were awarded a corner in the first half but couldn't take advantage of the opportunities and the teams entered the half tied 0-0.

St. Joseph's started off on the offensive front early on in the second, as a shot by Kristin Carroll was blocked and a corner was awarded. A few minutes later senior goalkeeper Katie McGarrell made a save to keep the game level at 0-0.

Hartwick's offense was finally able to break through the Golden Eagles' defense it the 84th minute when Casey Boucher gained possession of a rebound and buried shot into the top corner to break the scoreless tie.

The Hawks connected again in the 88th minute when Allie Ricci delivered a cross to a diving Allyson Daniels who headed the ball into the back of the net to give Hartwick a 2-0 lead.

Hartwick finished with 14 shots and two corner kicks, while St. Joseph's had two shots and two corners. McGarrell had four saves on the afternoon for the Golden Eagles.

"It was a back and forth battle between the two teams," said St. Joseph's head coach Nic DeZenzo. "In the second half they struggled to get into a rhythm, but there were many positive to take from this game. We were definitely in the game, even when we were down 1-0. We pushed more numbers forward and were more aggressive on the offensive side," added DeZenzo.

The Golden Eagles return to the pitch on Sunday September 6 when they take on Oneonta St. at 12 PM in the second round of the Mayor's Cup.
