Women’s Soccer Falls to Oneonta 1-0 in Mayor's Cup Finale

Oneonta,NY| The St. Joseph's College (L.I.) women's soccer team suffered a 0-1 setback against Oneonta St. on Sunday afternoon in the final game of the Mayor's Cup in Oneonta, NY. With the loss, the Golden Eagles fall to 0-2-1 on the season, while Oneonta improves their record to 2-0-1.

Oneonta St.  had several opportunities to score on as they were awarded four corner kicks in the first ten minutes of play. Senior Joann Murino had the Golden Eagles first shot on goal which was saved by the opposing goal keeper. The both teams exchanged possessions but couldn't find the back of the net as the half ended tied 0-0.

The Red Dragons outshot St. Joseph's 8-1 and had the advantage in corners 5-0 in the first half.

Oneonta was given back-to-back corners in the 54th minute which lead into shots that missed wide. The Golden Eagles saw an opportunity to strike first in the in 61st minute with two strikes fired at the goal, which were saved. In the closing minutes of play Kayla Belush dribbled the ball into the box and shot it for the game-winning goal. The Golden Eagles would drop their second game of the season 1-0.

"Overall, it was a good game played by both teams," head coach Nic DeZenzo stated after the game. "In the opening minutes, the team struggled to get into a rhythm. After making changes in the second half, they got into a rhythm and created three very good scoring opportunites."

Senior goalkeeper Katie McGarrell recorded 11 saves on the afternoon in her 90 minutes of action. McGarrell and Murino were named to the all-tournament team for their efforts on the field.

The Golden Eagles open up conference play on Tuesday September 8 as they travel to Riverside-South County Park in North Arlington, NJ to take on Yeshiva University at 8 p.m.
