Golden Eagles Drops Contest to NYU, 5-0

Riverdale, NY| The St. Joseph's College (L.I.) women's soccer team dropped a non-conference matchup, 5-0, to NYU at Gaelic Park on Thursday night. With the Golden Eagles drop to 5-9-1 (4-3 Skyline) as NYU improves to 9-4-0 (1-3 UAA) on the year.

New York University, who was previously ranked #16 by the National Soccer Coaches Association of America (NSCAA), got off to a strong start controlling the tempo throughout the first half. Katie McGarrell was tested early in the sixth minute, when she had to make her first save of the contest.

The Violets scored the first goal of the game in the 24th minute, when Maddy Clappin delivered a ball across the box from 35 yards out to Megan Carver, who she sent it to the upper right corner to take the 1-0 lead.

NYU continued to pressure the Golden Eagles defense and converted its second goal of the game in the 43rd minute, when McKennah Spagnola stole the ball in the midfield and scored on a breakaway. The Golden Eagles concluded the half trailing NYU 2-0.

NYU continued to control the game in the second half, creating set pieces and looking to score additional goals. The violets recorded six shots before scoring their third goal of the game in the 55th minute. Olivia Braender-Carr picked up a turnover at the top-corner of the box, and chipped it over to take the 3-0 lead.

NYU added a fourth goal in the 78th minute when Clappin sent the through ball to Lexi Clarke, who one-touched it into the goal. The Violets capped their scoring run in the 85th minute, when Meredith Hackerson crossed the balled to Nicole Malen, who shot it past the diving keeper for the 5-0 win.

In a match that saw her side outshot 27-1, McGarrell tied a season-high making 13 saves. 

The Golden Eagles will travel to take on Purchase College in a Skyline Conference matchup on Saturday, October 24. Kick-off is scheduled for 12 PM.
