Women's Soccer Starts Season with Win Over NJCU

Patchogue, NY| The St. Joseph's College women's soccer team began its 2019 season with a 6-2 non-conference win over New Jersey City University at Danzi Stadium on Sunday afternoon.

The Golden Eagles start the year at 1-0 with the Gothic Knights moving to 0-2.

Senior Christina Gagliardi opened the scoring in the seventh minute after she worked her way through the NJCU defense and sent her shot to the bottom left corner. Six minutes later, Carly Credidio's sent in a corner kick where Karissa Rutigliano's header got by NJCU's goalkeeper moving the score to 2-0.  Freshman Abbey Curcio capped the SJC scoring in the first half when her shot from 20 yards out found the back of the net for her first goal as a Golden Eagle. The Gothic Knights got on the board when Mallensy Vargas headed in a throw-in in the 29th minute.

The Golden Eagles extended its lead in the opening minutes of the second half when Savannah McMaster sent the ball into the box and a deflection off an NJCU defender crossed the goal line for a 4-1 SJC lead. Later in the half, Gagliardi sent a through ball to Curcio who found the back of the net before the senior broke free from visitor's defense and her shot to the bottom right corner for her second goal of the day. New Jersey City's Vargas was credited with her second goal of the day after her initial shot was saved and the rebound was knocked in by an SJC defender.

St. Joseph's goalkeeper Juliana Cintron-Leonardo finished with eight saves with her counterpart Cidney Lee-Sam recording three.

The Golden Eagles return to Danzi Stadium on Tuesday, September 3 when they host Brooklyn College at 7:00 pm.
