Women's Soccer Suffers Overtime Loss to William Paterson

Patchogue, NY| Sienna Martinez's goal with five seconds left in regulation sent the St. Joseph's College (L.I.) women's soccer team into overtime with William Paterson University on Wednesday evening, but SJC ultimately fell to the Pioneers 2-1.

The Golden Eagles even out at 2-2 on the season as the Pioneers improve to 2-1.

WPU maintained possession for the majority of the first half outshooting the Golden Eagles 11-1. The Pioneers were first on the board when in the 26th minute when an SJC foul resulted in a free-kick for Kayla Miller who drilled it by St. Joseph's Madelyn Hunter from about 35 yards out.

The Golden Eagles turned it around in the second half regaining possession and outshooting the Pioneers 6-3. In the final seconds of regulation, SJC's Brook Esposito blasted a shot at WPU's keeper Erin Hickey who made the save, but Martinez was there for the rebound and put the ball in the net knotting the game at one.

After the first overtime period went scoreless and with less than a minute left on the clock in the second overtime frame, William Paterson's Hailey Nelson sent a through ball to Isabel Fernandez who went one-on-one with SJC's keeper Mikayla Ritter and placed her shot in the lower right corner to capture the win.

Hunter finished with six saves in the first half with Ritter finishing the game between the pipes with thee saves.  WPU's Hickey completed her night with three saves

The Golden Eagles open up Skyline Conference play on Saturday, September 18 as they travel to Farmingdale State College. Kick-off is slated for 11:00 am.
