Baseball Picks up a Split Against Lesley University

Auburndale, FL.| The St. Joseph's College baseball team came away with a split with Lesley University on day three at the RussMatt Invitational Tournament Friday afternoon. After suffering a 3-1 loss in game one, the Golden Eagles bounced back with a 9-2 win in game two.

The Golden Lions move to 2-6 on the season and the Lynx open its season at 1-1.

Game One

The Lynx jumped to an early lead with a run in the top of the first. Vincent Taliercio led off the game with a single to center and came around to score on a double to right by Matthew Warner.

Lesley extended their lead, 2-0, in the fourth when Steven DePalma doubled in Warner who singled to left to start the inning. Teliercio added an insurance run in the fifth when he stole home with two outs.

St. Joseph's lone run of the game came in the bottom of the sixth when Paul Britt led off with a single to center and advanced to second on a passed ball. Lou Doria followed with a base hit up the middle putting runners at the corners for Anthony Raucci who put the ball on the ground toward short allowing Britt to score.

Tyler Sanderson led the Golden Eagles at the plate recording two of the SJC hits in the game.

SJC stater PJ Martin was tagged with the loss allowing three runs on seven hits with a season-high 12 Ks. Bryan Lyons provide one inning of scoreless relief.

Lesley's Tom Muratore earned the win giving up just one run and seven hits in 6.1 innings of work. Nick Iadevaio picked up the save retiring the only two batters he faced.

Game Two

After a scoreless three innings, the Golden Eagles were first on the board with a run in the top of the fourth. Britt singled to left starting the innings and came into score on an RBI hit to left by Sanderson.

Tyler Costa led off the top of the fifth with a bunt single and stole second to move into scoring position. Raucci followed with a walk before Louis Fontinha laid down a bunt base hit of his own to load the bases for Britt who took an 0-1 pitch deep over the left field fence for a 5-0 lead.

The Lynx cut the deficit to three, 5-2, when they turned three hits into two runs in the bottom of the fifth.

The Golden Eagles closed out the scoring nearly batting around in the sixth plating four runs on five hits moving the game to its final score of 9-2.

SJC's Joseph Murphy earned his first win of the season holding the Lynx to just two runs on five hits and seven Ks in a complete game effort.

Lesley's starter DePalma got the loss allowing one run on four hits in four innings.

The Golden Eagles wrap up its stay at the RussMatt Invitational when they take on Oswego State tomorrow, March 10 at 9:00 am.
