Baseball Beats Mt. St. Mary in Opening Game of Skyline Tournament

Farmingdale, NY| The second-seeded St. Joseph's College baseball team advances in the winner's bracket of the Skyline with an 8-3 victory over the third-seeded Mt. St. Mary College Friday evening.

The Golden Eagles improve to 23-14 on the season with the Knights sliding to 22-11-1.

A solo home run by MSMC's Tom Huvane put the Knights on the board in the top of the second, but a quick response from SJC with an RBI single up the middle by Daniel Campanelli knotted the score at one.

The Golden Eagles grabbed their first lead of the day in the bottom half of the fifth when a sacrifice fly off the bat of Lou Doria followed by a wild pitch pushed two runs across putting the SJC ahead 3-1.

That lead was short lived as the Knights came back with a pair of RBI extra-base hits in the top of the sixth to even the score at three. St. Joseph's capitalized on an MSMC defensive miscue that led to two unearned runs to cross in the bottom of the six to go back on top 5-3.

The Golden Eagles added some insurance with an RBI single from Tyler Sanderson in the seventh and a two-RBI base hit from Dylan Piscitelli in the eighth to push the game to its final 8-3.

Tyler Crafa led the Golden Eagles at the plate a 3-for-4 performance with an RBI and a run scored. Paul Britt finished 2-for-4 with two runs scored.

Anthony Papa earned his fourth win of the season allowing three runs on six hits with four strikeouts in a complete game effort. MSMC's Jake Stewart was tagged with loss surrendering five runs on six hits in six innings.

St. Joseph's moves on to face top-seeded Farmingdale State tomorrow, May 5 at 12:00 pm.
