Baseball Sweeps Mt. St. Mary, 4-2, 5-2

Patchogue, NY| The St. Joseph's College Golden Eagles completed a doubleheader sweep over Mt. St. Mary's College Sunday afternoon at Gregg Alfano Field. The Golden Eagles claimed a 4-2 win in game one before taking game two 5-2.

SJC improved to 12-9 on the season and 7-1 in Skyline Conference play. The Knights drop to 11-7 overall and 6-2 in Skyline action.

Game One

The Golden Eagles scored first with a run in the bottom of the second. Tyler Sanderson reached on a one-out bunt single and moved to second on a wild pitch. A couple batters later Tyler Costa drove in Sanderson with a base hit up the middle.

A solo home run off the bat of MSMC's Blake Keenan in the top of the fourth tied the score at one.

SJC went back on top when Lou Doria scored on a wild pitch in the bottom of the fifth.

The Golden Eagles created some distance with a couple runs in the bottom of the sixth. Daniel Campanelli and Sanderson walked with one out and moved up 90 feet on a wild pitch. After an MSMC pitching change, Doria turned on an offering from Nick Zestanakis down the right field line plating both runs.

The Knights were retired in order in the top of the seventh and the eight, but put together a threat in the ninth loading the bases with just one out. A pinch-hit sacrifice fly to right scored Blake Keenan from third, but SJC Tyler Villez got Nick Rizzo to pop out to shallow right field for the final out.

Sanderson, Doria and Tyler Crafa were responsible for St. Joseph's only hits of the game.

Starter Joseph Murphy earned his third win of the season allowing just one run on four hits with seven strikeouts.

MSMC's Christian Spano was tagged with the loss allowing four runs on two hits with five walks.

Game Two

The Golden Eagles again took an early lead plating two runs in the bottom of the first. Anthony Raucci led off with a single through the left side before Louis Fontinha reached on an error. Britt came up and turned on one down the left field line to bring in Raucci. Fontinha would come in on a passed ball for a 2-0 SJC lead.

Starter PJ Martino cruised through the first four innings before running into some trouble in the top of the fifth when Jack Goodwin singled and Nick Rizzo was hit by a pitch putting two runners on with one out. Anthony Rizzo then singled to center scoring Goodwin from second. The Knights got another base hit to load the bases for Chris Introcaso who flew to deep center field allowing Nick Rizzo to score. Anthony Rizzo was tagging on the play from second was called out for leaving the bag early for the final out of the inning,

An RBI double by Britt added some insurance in the bottom of the sixth moving the score to 5-3.

The Knights loaded the bases off reliever Elliot Robles in the top of the ninth, but the sophomore was able to get Tom Huvane to fly out left field leaving the runners stranded and earning his first save of the season.

Raucci finished 3-for-4 with 2 RBI's and a run scored with Britt and Doria recording two hits apiece.

Martino moves to 4-1 on the season allowing two runs on eight hits with six Ks.

Alexander Maher took the loss allowing four runs on five hits.

The Golden Eagles return to action on Saturday, April 14 when they travel to SUNY Old Westbury. Game time is slated for 12:00 pm.
