Baseball Earns Split with Merchant Marines

Patchogue, NY| Lou Doria's RBI double in the bottom of the sixth lifted the Golden Eagles to a 2-1 win in game two over the United States Merchant Marine Academy Saturday afternoon at Gregg Alfano Field. The Mariners took game one 7-4.

The Golden Eagles move to 8-9 on the season and 3-1 in Skyline Conference play. USMMA now sits at 17-3 overall (5-1 Skyline).

Game One

Scoreless through three, an unearned run in the top of the fourth put the Mariners on the board. A five-run top of the sixth highlighted by a two-run home run off the bat of Alex Mesaros and a two-RBI double from Jesse Reinebold pushed the USMMA lead to 6-0.

The Golden Eagles cut the deficit to two, 6-4, in the bottom of the seventh. Daniel Campanelli reached on an error and was followed by a Tyler Sanderson walk putting two runners on with one out. Dylan Piscitelli's single to right got by the right fielder allowing Campinelli and Sanderson to score. Tyler Costa singled to center driving in Piscitelli before coming into score on a sacrifice fly by Anthony Raucci.

USMMA got a run back in the eighth and held SJC to just one base runner over the final two innings to come away with the 7-4 win.

Piscitelli led the Golden Eagles at the plate going 2-for-4 with an RBI and a run scored.

SJC starter Nick Clemente was tagged with the loss allowing five runs on four hits in 5.1 innings.

USMMA's Joe Raab earned the win allowing four runs on five hits and 11 strikeouts in a complete game effort.

Game Two

The Merchant Marines got a quick run in the top of the first when a sacrifice fly scored Jacob Sithong who doubled to start the game.

SJC broke through in the bottom of the fourth when Paul Britt singled up the middle and came in to score on a double to deep centerfield by Piscitelli.

After a scoreless fifth, Piscitelli reached on a two-out single to right and came in on Doria's double to left.

PJ Martino retired the Mariners in order in the top of the seventh to claim the 2-1 win. Martino surrendered just one run on three hits with six strikeouts en route to his third win of the season.

Despite striking out 13, USMMA's Andrew Spinnenweber got the loss allowing two runs on six hits.

Piscitelli finished 2-for-3 with an RBI and a run scored.

The Golden Eagles return to Gregg Alfano Field when they host John Jay College Tuesday, April 3. Game time is set for 4:00 pm.
