Brooklyn, NY| The St. Joseph's College baseball team picked up two Skyline Conference wins over St. Joseph's College-Brooklyn Saturday afternoon at Calvert Vaux Park. The Golden Eagles benefitted from an unearned run in the top of the 10th inning to take game one 4-3 before completing the sweep with an 8-0 win in game two.
The Golden Eagles improve to 10-9 on the season with a 5-1 Skyline Conference mark. The Bears slide to 2-19 overall and 1-5 in conference play.
Game One
The Golden Eagles led 1-0 courtesy of an unearned run in the top of the first before a three-run bottom of the fourth put the Bears ahead 3-1.
SJC-LI got a run back in the top of the fifth when Tyler Crafa led off the inning with a base hit through the left side and came in to score on a sacrifice fly off the bat of Matthew Burnett.
After a scoreless sixth, Tyler Sanderson started the top of the seventh with a single up the middle. A sacrifice bunt and wild pitch put him on third for Paul Britt who singled him in with two outs to tie the game at three.
The Bears got a leadoff single from Adam Schwartz in the bottom of the ninth, but he was erased when Britt gunned him down trying to steal second. Anthony Caminiti took the mound in relief for Nick Clemente and retired the next two batters sending the game into extra innings.
Dylan Piscitelli reached on an error with one out in the top of the 10th. Bears' pitcher Peter Terranova caught Lou Doria looking for out number two, but the second SJC-BK error of the inning allowed Piscitelli to score putting the Golden Eagles ahead 4-3.
Caminiti retired the Bears in order in the bottom half of the inning to claim his second win of the season.
Terranova was tagged with the loss despite not allowing a hit in two innings of relief.
Britt was 3-for-5 with an RBI and Burnett finished 2-for-3 with an RBI and a run scored.
Game Two
A two-run home run off the bat of Britt in the top of the first gave the Golden Eagles an early lead in game two. An unearned run moved the score to 3-0 through two innings.
SJC-LI starter Anthony Papa retired the Bears in order in the third and the fourth before another defensive miscue by the home team allowed two runs to score extending the Golden Eagle lead to 5-0.
RBI doubles by Michael Ferrufino and Dan Campanelli pushed the score to 8-0 in the sixth. Papa cruised through the bottom half of the sixth before giving way to Michael Catanzaro who pitched around a one-out single in the seventh to secure the 8-0 win.
Burnett, Britt, Ferrifuno, Campanelli, and Crafa each recorded hits for the Golden Eagles. Britt and Campinelli provided 3 and 3 RBI's, respectively.
Papa earned his first win of the season allowing just three hits with five strikeouts in six innings of work.
The Golden Eagles return home to Gregg Alfano Field when they host Mt. St. Mary's College on Sunday, April, 8. First pitch is slated for 12:00 pm.
