Women's Lacrosse Defeated by Coast Guard, 22-16

New London, CT| Sophomore Diana Johnston scored six goals for the visiting St. Joseph's College women's lacrosse team, but the Golden Eagles were defeated 22-16 by the Coast Guard Academy Saturday afternoon.

The Golden Eagles slip to 0-2 on the season and the Bears remain undefeated at 3-0.

SJC struck first when sophomore Alexis Hillman connected with junior Nicole Stoppelli in the first minute of play. Coast Guard came back for three unanswered goals taking a 3-1 lead. Back-to-back scores from Johnston even the score at three, but the Bears strung together three more for a 6-3 advantage. The teams remained close through the second portion of the half before GCA went into the break with a 9-8 lead.

Johnston's fourth goal of the day evened the score at nine in the opening minutes of the second half, but Coast Guards Daria McKenna found Marietta Davis to regain the lead 20 seconds later, 10-9. SJC remained within striking distance, but a 5-0 CGA run late in the game put the Bears up by their largest margin, 20-13.  The Golden Eagles closed the gap to four, 20-16, but the Coast Guard went on to win 22-16.

Johnston, who scored a hat trick in each half, added an assist and five draw controls to her day.

Sophomore Lauren Gregson pitched in with four goals and an assist and junior Nicole Stoppelli had her hand in seven scores with two goals and five assists.

The Coast Guard featured seven different players finding the back of the net with Brenna Farrington putting away a game-high eight goals.  Davis and McKenna recorded three goals apiece.

The Golden Eagles won 22 of 39 draw controls with senior Kristin Carroll picking up a game-high 10 to go with her three goals and two assists on the day.

Junior goalkeeper Lindsay Ramos recorded 13 saves in her complete-game effort. For the Bears, starter Rebecca Dolan allowed six goals with two save before relief keeper Mary Budri came in to record four saves and the win.

The Golden Eagles remain on the road when they travel to FDU-Florham on Wednesday, March 8. Game time is set for 4:00 pm.
