Men’s Basketball Edged by Manhattanville on Saturday

Purchase, NY| The St. Joseph's College (L.I.) men's basketball team was defeated by Manhattanville College, 71-64, in a Skyline Conference contest in Purchase, NY on Saturday afternoon.

With the loss, the Golden Eagles slide to 6-7 overall on the year and 2-4 in Skyline play as the Valiants improve to 5-6 and 2-2.

Freshman Alec Tabada scored a game-best 22 points on 7-for-12 shooting from the field. The forward also collected four steals and four rebounds.

Sophomore Timothy Hirdt was 6-for-8 from the field and tallied 16 points and a team-high eight rebounds.

Manhattanville was paced by Tommy Lotito, who converted on 11 of 12 free throws and scored 20 points.

A back and forth first half yielded a 30-29 lead for the Golden Eagles at the break. The guests led by as many as 10 points in the opening frame but the Valiants grabbed the final five points of the period. 

SJC went ahead 12 points with 11:40 in regulation, but the hosts chipped away at the lead, went ahead with 2:16 to play, and held on for a seven-point victory.

Manhattanville outshot SJC from the field, 44.0% to 37.9%, and from three, 40.9% to 29.4%. St. Joseph's outscored the Valiants from the bench (29-17).

The Golden Eagles return to action on Monday, January 17, when they visit Centenary for a non-conference contest at 7:00 pm.
