#4 Women’s Soccer Blanks #5 Purchase, Advances to Skyline Semis

Patchogue, NY| Junior Samantha Caruso scored the game's only goal as the fourth-seeded St. Joseph's College (L.I.) women's soccer team defeated fifth-seeded SUNY Purchase 1-0 at Danzi Stadium on Saturday afternoon.

With the win the Golden Eagles, now 11-7 on the year, advance to the semifinal round of the Skyline Conference Championships where they'll meet the tournament's top seed, Mount St. Mary College.

SJC dominated the first half, outshooting the guests 13-1, but was forced to wait until the 43rd minute to find a breakthrough. Amidst heavy pressure by the Golden Eagles, Purchase's failed clearing attempt found the feet of Caruso, who, from atop the box, beat the keeper low on the left side.

Despite continued pressure in the second half, the hosts failed to find an insurance marker but also limited Purchase to just four shots and, fairly easily, rode their one-goal lead out to the final whistle.

Sophomore Juliana Cintron-Leonardo made three saves and recorded her fifth shutout of the season in a match that saw her side outshoot its opponent 22-5.

SJC's semifinal match-up will take place on Wednesday, November 1 at 4:00 pm in Newburgh, NY. The winner advances to the tournament final on Saturday, November 4.
